Smythe later wrote a book about it with the same title.

Flora:

The valley is divided into three sub-alpine zones: foothills alpine (3,200 m to 3,500 m), lower alpine (3,500 m to 3,700 m), and higher alpine (above 3,700 m). These zones vary in vegetation, with the upper limit for trees being 3,500 m. The habitats in the valley include valley bottoms, river beds, small forests, meadows, slopes of various types, moraine areas, plateaus, bogs, stone deserts, and caves. The surrounding hills are densely forested, providing a buffer zone.

In 1992, the Forest Research Institute documented 600 species of angiosperms and 30 pteridophytes in the valley and its surroundings, with 58 new records discovered, including 4 new ones for the Himalayan state. Among these plants, 5 out of 6 globally threatened species are unique to the valley, such as Aconitum falconeri, A. balfouri, Himalayan maple (Acer caesium), the blue Himalayan poppy (Meconopsis aculeata), and Saussurea Atkinson. Additionally, 31 species classified as rare and endangered were observed within the national park in 1998.

The dominant plant family in the Valley of Flowers is Asteraceae, comprising 62 species. Local villagers use 45 medicinal plants, and some species like Saussurea obvallata (brahmakamal) are collected for religious offerings to goddesses Nanda Devi and Sunanda Devi. Due to its rich plant diversity, the site is recognized as a Centre of Plant Diversity.

While some species like the tahr are common, others like the serow, goral, musk deer, and blue sheep are rare.

The presence of snow leopards was confirmed in October 2004, with common leopards reported in lower areas of the valley near villages. Brown bears and blue sheep have also been reported by local residents.

Reptiles commonly seen include the high altitude lizard, Himalayan ground skink, and Himalayan pit viper. The area is rich in butterfly species, including the lime butterfly, common yellow swallowtail, common Mormon, spangle, and common blue apollo.
